    Simultaneous Determination of 15 Phenolic Components in Cigarette Mainstream Smoke by GC-MS

    • Cigarettes before and after adding Maillard reaction products (MRPs) were used as research objects, and mainstream smoke particulate matter was captured by Cambridge filter. The flavor components were extracted by solvent extraction method. GC-MS was applied to the simultaneous determination of 15 phenolic components in cigarette mainstream smoke. The HP-5MS chromatographic column was used for GC separation and the selected ion monitoring mode was adopted in MS determination. Phenethyl acetate was used as internal standard. Detection limits (3s) of the method ranged from 0.14 to 2.12 mg·L-1 and lower limits of determination (10s) ranged from 0.46 to 7.07 mg·L-1. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of the sample of cigarette, giving values of recovery found by standard addition method and RSDs (n=5) of determined total amounts in the ranges of 86.4%-105% and 1.4%-7.2% respectively. With the increase of the additive amount of MRPs, the content and total amount of most phenolic components in mainstream smoke showed a decreasing trend, to a certain extent, which improves the safety of cigarettes.
