Determination of Moisture in Aerosol of Heated Not Burned Cigarette by Gas Chromatography with Filters Trap

    • Based on the principle of moisture conservation in the heated not burn cigarettes before and after smoking, the effects of environmental conditions, puff parameters and filter capacity on the determined values of moisture in aerosol of heated not burned cigarette were analyzed, then a method for the determination of the moisture in aerosol of heated not burned cigarette by gas chromatography (GC) with filters trap was proposed. Heated not burned cigarettes were smoked by suction machine at the conditions of puff capacity of 35 mL, puff interval of 30 s and each cigarette puff number of 7. After smoking, Cambridge filter (diameter of 44 mm) was used to capture the aerosol of heated not burned cigarettes, and each filter captured 5 cigarettes. The quarter of new Cambridge filter was used to wipe the trap machine. Then the all filters used were put into a 100 mL round-bottom bottle and 20 mL of extraction agent (1 000.00 mL isopropyl alcohol mixed with 5.00 mL anhydrous ethanol) were quickly added. Then the above solution was sealed and vibrating extracted at a rate of 150 times·min-1 for 30 min. The extraction solution was determined by GC. As shown by the results, linear relationship between value of mass concentration of moisture and ratios of its peak area to internal standard (ethanol) peak area was kept within 8.0 g·L-1, with detection limit (3S/N) of 0.154 mg·cig-1. Test for recovery was made on actual sample at 3 concentration levels by standard addition method, giving results in the range of 98.4%-101%. This method has been used to analyze the heated not burned cigarettes. The determined values of moisture in aerosol of heated not burned cigarettes were in the range of 10.71-22.50 mg·cig-1, and RSDs (n=5) of the determined values were less than 2.0%.
