    Determination of 55 Volatile Organic Compounds in Sanitary Napkins by Headspace-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

    • A method for the determination of 55 volatile organic compounds in sanitary napkins was proposed by headspace-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-GC-MS). The sanitary napkin sample was cut into small pieces, and the method of automatic headspace sampling was adopted, shaking at 110 ℃ for 15 min at low speed. 55 volatile organic compounds in the sample was separated on DB-624 column (60 m×0.25 mm, 1.40 μm) and detected by mass spectrometry. External standard method was used for quantitative analysis. As shown by the results, linear relationships between values of the corresponding peak area and mass fraction of 55 volatile organic compounds were found in the range of 0.080-2.000 μg·g-1, with lower limits of determination (10S/N) in the range of 0.000 3-0.031 0 μg·g-1. Recovery test was carried out according to the standard addition method, giving results in the range of 81.3%-119%, with RSDs (n=6) of the determined values less than 9.0%. This method was applied to the analysis of actual sanitary napkin samples, and a variety of volatile organic compounds were detected. The detection rate of 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene was up to 89.3%, and the detection amount of methyl chloride was up to 10.688 μg·g-1.
