GC-MS Determination of 8 Volatile Organic Compounds in Floor Materials

    • GC-MS was applied to the determination of 8 volatile organic compounds, i.e. toluene, ethyl benzene, o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, styrene, butyl acetate and n-undecane in wooden or compound wooden floor. The sample (5 g) of floor board was extracted ultrasonically with methanol (15 mL) for 20 min. The extract was separated on Rxi-5ms capillary column, and determined under selected ion monitoring mode in MS. Linear relationships between values of peak area and mass concentration of the 8 volatile organic compounds (m-xylene and p-xylene were measured as cumulative total) were kept in the same range of 0.5-10.0 mg·L-1 with detection limits (3S/N) in the range of 0.05-1.0 mg·L-1. Values of recovery found by standard addition method were in the range of 98.0%-105%, and values of RSD′s (n=5) in the range of 2.3%-6.6%.
