    Spectrophotometric Determination of Cefadroxil with Emerson Reagent

    • Spectrophotometry was applied to the determination of cefadroxil with emerson reagent. In Na2B4O7-NaOH buffer solution of pH 9.60, a red compound was produced by the reaction of cefadroxil with 4-aminoantipyrine in the presence of K3Fe(CN)6. The stoichiometric ratio of the compound was 1∶1 and the maximum absorption wavelength found was 508 nm. Linear relationship between values of absorbance and mass concentration of cefadroxil was obtained in the range of 1.20-110.0 mg·L-1, with detection limit (3s/k) of 0.80 mg·L-1. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of drug samples of cefadroxil, giving results in consistency with the values obtained by pharmacopoeia method with RSD′s (n=5)in the range of 0.20%-0.71%. Reaction mechanism of Emerson reagent and cefadroxil was also studied preliminarily.
