Abstract
A method for HPLC determination of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde in adhesives for cigarettes, with pre-derivatization using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine as derivatizing agent, was proposed. The adhesive sample was extracted with pure water and the extract was contrifuged. An aliquot of the supernatant was taken and derivatized with the derivatizing agent. The products of derivatization,i.e.,the 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazone of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, were separated on C18 column and eluted with mobile phase containing acetonitrile and water.UV detection at 358 nm was adopted in the determination.Standard curves were prepared using standard 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazones of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde.Linear relationship in the ranges of 0.10-10.0 mg·L-1 were found for both formaldehyde and acetaldehyde.Tests for recovery were made and the results obtained were in the ranges of 98.3%-118.9% (for HCHO) and 79.2%-89.2% (for CH3CHO),with values of RSD′s (n=5) less than 5%.
