HPLC Determination of Benzene Homologues and Phthalic Esters as Plastifiers in Architectural Adhesives

    • HPLC was applied to the simultaneous determination of benzene homologues and phthalic esters as plastifiers in architectural adhesives. The sample was extracted with ethyl acetate, and separated by gradient elution on C18 chromatographic column, and their contents determined with DAD-detection at the wavelength of 254 nm.Linear relationship between values of peak area and mass concentration of standards of the 5 different benzene homologues and 5 kinds of phthalic esters were found between values in magnitudes of 1-3 orders, with limits of detection (3S/N) of benzene homologues in the range of 0.003-0.006 g·L-1 and limits (3S/N) of detection of phthalic esters in the range within 0.003 g·L-1.The values of recovery of target compounds in solvent type and aqueous type architectural adhesives found were ranged from 98.1% to 101.9%.The values of RSD′s (n=6) for different target compounds in the same architectural adhesive between 5 laboratories was in the range of 0.8%-4.2%.
