Pyrolysis-GC-MS Analysis of Scutellaria Baicalensis Extract for Its Pyrolytic Products

    • Pyrolytic properties of Scutellaria baicalensis extract were studied by thermogravimetric analysis and on-line pyrolysis, and GC-MS in hyphenation (Py-GC-MS). In a helium atmosphere, the extract was pyrolyzed at 300, 450, 600, 750, and 900 ℃, separately, and the pyrolytic products were directly introduced into the instrument and analyzed qualitatively and semi-quantitatively. The extract was added into cigarettes as a flavor. The results showed that: ① large mass loss point of the extract was not seen clearly in the thermo-mass loss curve; ② number of pyrolysates obtained separately at 300, 450, 600, 750 and 900 ℃ were 12,18,28,42 and 40 respectively; ③ the pyrolytic products obtained below 600 ℃ were mainly aldehydes, ketones, esters and furans; the amounts of hazardous substances released was found to increase gradually with the increase of pyrolytic temperature; pyrolytic products obtained at 900 ℃ were mainly benzenes, toluenes and naphthalenes; ④ the extract as an additive for cigarettes improved and modified the flavor of cigarette smoking, enhance the notes of fresh aroma, and softness of the cigarette smoke.
