Determination of Cationic Surfactants with Ion Selective Electrodes Based on Electroactive Ion-pair Complex

Three kinds of ion selective electrodes (ISE′s) based on ion pair complexes with dodecyldimethyl benzylammonium tetraphenylborate,hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium tetraphenylborate and octadecyltrimethyl ammonium tetraphenylborate as sensing materials individually,were prepared and their electrochemical properties tested.Good Nernst responses of these 3 ISE′s were observed against the cationic surfactants dodecyldimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DDMBAC),hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTMAB) and octadecyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (OTMAC),and the ISE′s were found feasible to be used for the determination of the above mentioned cationic surfactants.These ISE′s were also used as indicator electrodes in the potentiometric titration of DDMBAC,OTMAC and Hyamine 1622 using sodium tetraphenylborate as titrant.Results obtained were found to be checked quite well with the 2-phase titrimetry.
