On the Testing of the Flame Retardant,Polybromated Diphenyl Ether in ABS Plastics

Polybromated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs),used as flame retardant in ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) plastics,were extracted from the sample with toluene in a Soxhlet′s extractor,and determined by GC-MS after concentration and purification.Total contents of bromine (Br) in the compounds,before and after extraction were determined by EDXRFS in a separate sample.Precision of the XRF determination was tested and values of RSD′s (n=11) obtained were less than 5%.Precision and recovery of the GC-MS determination were also tested and value of RSD (n=7) found was 1.83%,and values of recovery obtained were in the range of 85.1%-87.1%.Detection limit (3S/N) of the GC-MS determination was found to be 0.10 mg·L-1.
